Deck Maintenance: Protect Your Investment

Deck maintenance

Your deck is an extension of your living space and a significant investment. With proper maintenance, it can last for decades. Here's how to keep your deck looking great year after year.

Annual Cleaning

At minimum, clean your deck once a year. Remove debris, sweep between boards, and use a deck cleaner to remove mold, mildew, and grime. Pressure washing works well but use caution to avoid damaging the wood.

Inspect for Damage

Check for loose boards, popped nails, and signs of rot. Pay special attention to areas where water collects. Catching problems early prevents costly repairs later.

Stain and Seal Every 2-3 Years

Staining protects wood from UV damage while sealing prevents moisture penetration. The frequency depends on your climate and sun exposure. If water no longer beads on the surface, it's time to reseal.

Address Issues Promptly

Don't ignore small problems. A loose board today can become a safety hazard tomorrow. Replace damaged boards and tighten hardware as needed throughout the year.
